Law enforcement officers giving back to the communities they serve. Cops for Kids, Inc. is the registered charity of the Professional Law Enforcement Association (PLEA), which is comprised of active law enforcement officers from the South Florida area. Cops for Kids, Inc. was registered as a charity in 1988, as a means for PLEA members to give back to the communities they serve. Cops for Kids, Inc.’s main activity has been the annual toy drive and giveaway. In 1998 Cops for Kids, Inc. distributed toys to over 1,200 under privileged children residing within public housing sites and the State of Florida Protective Services foster homes. In 1999, Cops for Kids, Inc. through its partnerships with local businesses such as First Union National Bank, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Ryder Systems, K-Mart, and Target was able to reach over 3,000 children during the annual toy drive. 1999 also marked the expansion of Cops for Kids, Inc.’s activities. In April, it held its first annual Easter Bunny Bash (which is now an ongoing event) for abused and neglected children in the custody of Protective Services. In October, the charity held a Halloween Party for the children at the Linda ray Intervention Center, located within the Jackson Memorial Hospital complex. This year, we had also added a Valentine’s Day event for children with blood disorders hospitalized at Jackson Memorial Hospital. This was such a success that we expanded the Valentine’s Day visit to include the Holtz Center Children’s Cancer Ward as well. Other activities are currently being planned. Cops for Kids, Inc. has established partnership not only with local businesses but also with service organizations and governmental agencies. Each of us has the same goal of providing some happiness to the lives of our community’s most needy children.
