Vision: Protect and preserve Traditional Indigenous Teachings and Culture Mission: To offer a way to relearn our relationship with the natural world Purpose: To create a positive natural environment for learning The Natural Law Institute is a grassroots, multifaceted community center of learning located in McLaughlin, South Dakota, within the Bear Soldier district of the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation. The Institute serves as a facilitator in the study of the elements of creation and how we can combine modern sustainability practices with ancient Indigenous cultural knowledge to create a better understanding. The Institute is centrally located and in walking distance for all who live in town, and easily accessible from all areas. The Natural Law Institute is designed to help break the vicious cycle of learned dependency, to encourage sobriety, and be an avenue for community members and others to learn about Natural Law, Indigenous culture, and sustainable living practices, such as gardens, green-building, renewable energies and technology. The Institute works to create opportunities that fulfill the fundamental need of Indigenous people to earn and live in a healthier environment. Within our target area, the poor living conditions of North-Central South Dakota, helplessness and hopelessness runs rampant with extremely high rates of poverty, unemployment,alcoholism, suicide, homelessness, teen pregnancy, and pervasive violence, all leading to the loss of the language, culture, and identity.
